Vol. 112 Individualist “Chptr 4 and Vrs 1”

Established in 2011, I was blessed to conduct an interview with this guy behind the brand “meagratia“, Mr. Takafumi Sekine. With years of being an intern and a student at Tokyo Mode Gakuen, he finally set his boat to sail to the men’s fashion game. I was actually writing an article about him long time ago and it was horrible as I looked back into my writing and everything. However, it will eventually become my series of memorabilia so it is all good to me haha. I hope nothing would bother him though.
He is such a nice and gentle guy that I am really looking forward to having an actual interview with him soon. I might gave him a weird and random questions but he was kindly enough to accept my offer to do the interview below. Also he was great enough to share pictures of his latest collection so these will be featured along an interview. You folks can cop his products here.

IO) Please describe yourself with detail in regards to your occupation, your concept in your creation, explanation of yourself regarding to what you do, your entities etc..

meagratia: My Appreciation

“gratia” holds a meaning of “appreciation”.
The past to the future, weaved future to give people hope from a blessing of the past.
As time goes by, a thought changes its form by bearing the earmark of deepness,
A continuous shift lead to the progress wrapped by generosity.
Assisting people to pursue their dreams with a fabric that is made out of dream and happiness,
Expressing enclosed warmth of humanity with a craft,
The will of history remain within a chemistry of something old and new.
It will mark the future as if to shine a light to it.

IO) How did you start to form your own identity? What motivated you?

Sekine-san) I have been a huge fan of crafting things since I was a child. I had an interest in fashion and got myself into fashion game when I was high school student. Then, I felt that I wanted to create my own pieces. That was the beginning.

IO) We, as a Japanese, we all went through wearing a uniform especially in high school. Did you have any thought on uniform and casual wear? Also, as an adolescence years of your life, have you ever thought of being an attention seeker? I had it all the way….

Sekine-san) I felt awkward that every one of us wore same uniform at that time. So I wore my uniform in a way that I was sort of dressing it down as my own way.

I did have an attachment to the style of casual wear too much so that I spent pretty much all of my money that I earned by part time job.

And same here. Drawing attention from girls was my intention all the way haha.

IO) Who/What inspires you?

Sekine-san) My mother. She continues to make clothing until now. She has been teaching me how to work on pattern making since I had an interest in making clothing.

Plamodel (Plastic model) such as plastic scale model of mobile suit gundam. The process of putting various parts together as to make one thing have a similarity with making clothing.

IO) I cannot thank my mom enough for everything as I grew up fatherless. Who do you think she is for you?

Sekine-san) She has been supporting me ever since the beginning though I might keep giving her hard time and a bother. I totally appreciate her for everything as well.

p5

IO) Your wish for those who appreciate your art/creation/product/doing, Followers.

Sekine-san) I am just happy that if I can bring people an uplifting feeling by slipping their body into my clothing and spend a day with confidence in their mind.

IO) What are your thoughts about trends, your entities current situation, and your product? The future?

Sekine-san) I particularly do not focus on current trend. I would hopefully like to have a runway show in Europe as one of my plan for the future. Europe where western clothing has its root, showcasing my creation with a sense of Japaneseness, I would love to see an authentic reaction toward my clothing from many people.

p10

IO) We usually wear western clothing in our daily life. Any thought or impression on Japanese traditional clothing “Wafuku”?

Sekine-san) As one of our unique and traditional culture, “Kimono” that is recognized throughout the world would be something to praise for. Including everlasting shape of clothing that has been passed down from long time ago, I think that a characteristic of weaving and coloring for Kimono is considered to be truly beautiful.
