Vol. 142 Individualist “Chptr 12 and Vrs 1”

I was super lucky enough to be able to conduct an interview with this amazing crafter “Ren“. I was actually writing about his product about almost a year ago here and this is nothing but a poor article (or it was probably my random thought so I was hoenestly happy and psyched to conduct an interview!! though) than I have ever seen. Well, I was sorta exploring around what I can do with this platform so this is all good to me now haha.

Born in Shiga prefecture, (which is next to my home town Nara) he has been amazed by how product are made with hands. He stated that product that human created has a memory embedded to them. Handprint and warmth that craftsmanship put an effort to will always remain into the product, That’s exactly what I stated (retrieved from his thought and put out as in English). I got to know what he is actually thinking  about his work and philosophy so here we go.

IO) Who are you? Please tell us about yourself. (Please tell us about how you interpret this question)

Nakane-san) Metalsmith. I do not call myself neither as an artist nor craftsman. I would leave a decision to name me up to those who have received my work.

IO) Please describe yourself with detail in regards to your occupation, your concept in your creation, explanation of yourself regarding to what you do, your entities etc..

Nakane-san) I basically work on accessories, living ware, and object by old-fashioned shaping technique: metallic casting that is known as to pound metal with hammer in a careful manner for every piece.

The material of metal fascinates me and my style would not use any casting mold nor molding machine. Metal has a flexibility of shaping because it has a combination of hardness and softness. Each every casting or scraping create a trace of one’s movement of hands as to shape its form.

I enjoy creating and taking values in every movement of my hands everyday. I hope that my handprints of my work will give people something worth for their life and feelings. Also I want people to have their own stories by spending their time with my products.

IO) How did you start to form your own identity? What motivated you?

Nakane-san) I want to have a simple life. Nowadays, I believe that it would be a bit hard for us to have a simple life as though it sounds pretty easy to do so. With that being said, I think that by using my hands to change the form of metal, adding function and beauty, and then reward would be given to me if I could give people impression. I think that I can get closed to the way of life and enable me to be down my alley if I could work to live on like these processes above. So here I am.

IO) Tell us how you live a daily life like you are down your alley

Nakane-san) It can be hard to fit into my ideal way of life in one day. Looking back to my past and days that I can think of would be

  1. A day spent all the way from Tokyo to Nagoya by hitchhiking.
  2. Scenery that I saw and a beer that I had with the state of worn out by climbing up on the mountain.
  3. A day that I get to see people smiling because they like my work.

Something like these. I remembered those days as to appreciate for direct connection of people and each moment of scenery, space and time.

I think that emotionally and physically we would be able to connect each other pretty easy and quick thanks to technology that evolved. It is really good and convenient. Still, I sometimes think that we live in a complex world and have ourselves busy without even realizing that our own capacity had already exceeded. Nevertheless, I would not want to just cut out all these connection or any sort of bond each other though. I just want to take notice of true nature as to appreciate people that surround me and time that I spend with them. I would like to take those into my account.

I feel like I am a bit abstract in what I say above though.

Ren 3

IO) Who/What inspires you?

Nakane-san) I am basically influenced by everything since I was born I believe. When it comes right down to it, I am influenced by something old, something important and valuable that was passed down from someone to someone and also its history and background, and figurative aesthetics in the nature.

IO) Your wish for those who appreciate your art/creation/product/doing, Followers.

Nakane-san) I am grateful that my work will enrich one’s feelings and blend into one’s lifestyle in a gentle way.

IO) What are your thoughts about trends, your entities current situation, and your product? The future?

Nakane-san) Nowadays, I believe that craft making in Japan has been booming popularity among small community. I hope that my work will become part of someone’s style (something internal), not just one of typical trend or fashion (something more superficial).

IO) What do you think of the reason of booming popularity of craft making among small community

Nakane-san) The flood of information and easy access to anything available, with that in mind, we are not looking for just buying products or items. We would like to get something more than just products, which is probably a background and process of making them. A lot of us are really into those details so that’s probably why.

Also, I get to see people from China, Taiwan, or Hong-Kong when I attended craft event. At the time when I visited some galleries out there in those countries, I could see some products or art work from Japanese crafter or artists.
