Vol. 149 Individualist “Chptr 14 and Vrs 2”

Following on interview with Teranishi-san “Teranishi Studio” on  “Individualist “Chptr 14 and Vrs 1”.

I spend some time to write about something out of my own head randomly here in this platform but I can’t help but to write a bit and erase it and then write…. I should focus more for it shouldn’t I? haha. This episode, he talks about how he embrace his nationality and root of Japanese and American. I might be a bit deep for him to talk about it so my apologies for that! Anyways, some of his quotes pretty much remind me that I experienced this feeling of what we are as Japanese. Maybe it is blessing to be able to go overseas and get to experience about this feeling?? I don’t know.

Here we go!

”Words like “gambare”, or “gaman” or “mottainai”. All these terms are foundational ideals in Japanese culture that don’t necessarily carry over to American culture, but these are all very much a part of me.”

IO) What does Japan, being Japanese or being a Japanese descendant mean to you? How do you think it has impacted your life and your success?

Teranishi-san) It’s very important to me. I grew up in a Japanese household, speaking Japanese, eating Japanese food, going to Japanese school (on the weekends), and being pretty immersed in Japanese culture; it’s definitely a big part of who I am. I had a moment, maybe in my early 20’s, where I started to realize how much Japanese culture and being of Japanese origin has meant to me.

I was just talking to my friend the other day about how there’s certain common terms in Japanese that don’t quite translate to English well. Words like “gambare”, or “gaman” or “mottainai”. All these terms are foundational ideals in Japanese culture that don’t necessarily carry over to American culture, but these are all very much a part of me.

IO) What do you think are the positive and negative points about being Japanese, Japanese descendants, and Japanese culture?

Teranishi-san) I’m definitely a product of being Japanese and American at the same time—both those cultures have shaped me. As such, I can appreciate both pieces of both cultures. I really appreciate the “gambare” work ethic of Japanese culture, but I think sometimes that goes a little too far.

Americans tend to be more laid back and I think there’s a great middle ground to be reached there. There’s definitely a few more examples of finding the best middle ground between the two cultures but I can’t really think of anything right now…

IO) As a Japanese/Japanese descendants, for you have any ambition, envy, or aspirations against western (U.S. for example) or Japanese cultures? How do you feel about Western/Japanese culture, do you think it has had an impact on your work?

Teranishi-san) This sort of follows what I said in the previous question, but I guess in general, Japanese culture is super clean, strict and proper (綺麗、きっちり、ちゃんとしてる), where American culture can be quite the opposite in many ways.

IO) Is there anything you find strange about Japan as a Japanese/Japanese (American/Canadian/Brazilian etc..)

Teranishi-san) Not really. I grew up visiting Japan semi-often so Japanese culture has been a part of me for a long time.

IO) What is your definition of creativity? How would you define creativity?

Teranishi-san) Hmm…I guess for me, it’s just a drive to make things.

IO) How would you define life in one sentence?

Teranishi-san) Seeking goodness.

IO) Do you have any tips for differentiating yourself from competitors?

Teranishi-san) Just be you.

IO) Something that you are currently into? What is a current hobby or interest of yours?

Teranishi-san) Playing music again, it’s sorta reopened my interest in making electrical things like guitars and guitar pedals.
