Vol.156 Individualist “Chptr 16 and Vrs 2”

Following on interview with Goda-san “傳 tutaee ” on  “Individualist “Chptr 16 and Vrs 1”.

Japan is now about to show its autumn face to us. Scorching heat is no longer a troublesome for us and as they mentioned, seasonal food and harvest are in season now to give us a joy to eat various foods. I personally do not have much interest in food so that I am no good to talk about food at all but at least I can tell what type of food is in season to cook and eat great in this season.

And Winter will come before long. As these four seasonal weather holds different scenery here in Japan and I guess winter is the best season to capture the moment of beauty in nature and feel the nature from inside. I am not much of a fan for winter but seeing these beautiful moments of nature in winter would be worth checking out.

“Precisely among these all four seasons, there is always something that is in season such as food, blooming etc. Enjoying seasonal things would give us the feeling of coming next season for sure. I think it is good to be Japanese that we can enjoy seasonal activities, food, and Japanese sake which is made out of seasonal harvest.”

IO) What does Japan, being Japanese or being a Japanese descendant mean to you? How do you think it has impacted your life and your success?

Goda-san) Japan enables us to feel the circle of four seasons and a country where there are sea, mountain and river plus suburban and metropolitan area. However, I wonder what Japanese is? I guess it’s referring to for those who raised and live out here in this island.

IO) Do you think that the specific place that people are born and raised can generate people’s national identity?

Goda-san) I never thought about what or how Japanese would be. And I agree with that. Basically the place becomes as it is because of people that live there for a long time. I think that it has a big part of someone’s life based on where they are grow up. Not only tradition that has created in certain place shape people but also external sources such as school or people that you meet on the street are all influential to them.

IO) What do you think are the positive and negative points about being Japanese, Japanese descendants, and Japanese culture?

Goda-san) A principle of multitudinous gods (I am not talking about religion here)

tutaee 11

IO) Care to elaborate that?

Goda-san) I don’t personally have a mindset about religion very much but what I meant is that this is our embedded principle that there is a god all around us including nature and surroundings. From long time ago, there is a certain pantheon from mountain, sea, and sometimes we honor sacred tree that had lived thousand years or even it is said that cooker in the kitchen that we use everyday might be the seat of the soul. I think that it is pretty great to value things around us that we live along with.

Probably the reason why I thought so is that I saw an three thousand years old mega tree during my summer break that’s why I answered like that haha.

Also simply four seasons in japan have taught me a lot. One of my favorite things in Japan to enjoy these different seasons to be fed, clothed and housed.

Precisely among these all four seasons, there is always something that is in season such as food, blooming etc. Enjoying seasonal things would give us the feeling of coming next season for sure. I think it is good to be Japanese that we can enjoy seasonal activities, food, and Japanese sake which is made out of seasonal harvest.

IO) Is there anything you find strange about Japan as a Japanese/Japanese (American/Canadian/Brazilian)

Goda-san) Ambiguity; it is weird but sometimes it is good.

IO) What is good about being ambiguous?

Goda-san) By its ambiguous expression that the language of Japanese is capable of, the receiver would take what it implies and fuels an imagination. Also it allows us to express in beautiful and kind ways.

IO) As a Japanese/Japanese descendants, for you have any ambition, envy, or aspirations against western (U.S. for example) or Japanese cultures? How do you feel about Western/Japanese culture, do you think it has had an impact on your work?

Goda-san) YES, I like something that exist from old times so that I especially have an adoration toward European countries that they value in the time of the old.

IO) How do you think Japan is going to become? Any thoughts?

Goda-san) Tourist mecca. Everything includes mountain, sea, metropolitan, and rural area, they are all mashed up together in one place regardless of old or new.

IO) Any plan to go abroad or expand your entity?

Goda-san) YES. Always a series of trial and error haha. I will go overseas in Asia soon.

IO) What is your definition of creativity? How would you define creativity?

Goda-san) Creativity is out of your own imagination.

Good Bye.

IO) How would you define life in one sentence?

Goda-san) It would be a little deep to say “meeting and parting” so I would say Hello and Good bye.

IO) Something that you are currently into? What is a current hobby or interest of yours?

Goda-san) The future of Tokyo.
