Vol.167 Individualist “Chptr 17 and Vrs 1” S.M

First of all, I would like to say that I have been away from this platform for so long that I almost forgot how to run lol. Just because my life has changed in a way that I get way more busier than last year. I know this is an excuse over and over again. So I just stick with what I do here again one last time. I would love to keep doing this ongoing journey with great peeps that I get to know so please allow me to continue.

This time, I got to know him through social media and he was willingly to be patient with me doing this so I just wanna say my sincere gratitude for him and hopefully I could let his peeps around him know what he has been doing out here in Japan and his thought on his craftsmanship through his life.

IO) Who are you? Please tell us about yourself. (Please tell us about how you interpret this question).

Seiji-san) I am a 40 year-old half-Japanese American who moved to Tokyo last year to start a handmade shoe business. I worked before in sports marketing at the NBA and wanted to be a sneaker designer, but I changed my mind after going to design school after leaving the NBA. I have been making shoes full-time for about 6 years. I make leather-soled shoes using traditional shoemaking methods, all by hand.

IO) Please describe yourself with detail in regards to your occupation, your concept in your creation, explanation of yourself regarding to what you do, your entities etc..

Seiji-san) After quitting the NBA I went to a design school in Italy. When I was there I tried on well-made leather shoes for the first time in my life, and I decided that I did not just want to design shoes, I wanted to make the highest quality most elegant shoes I could by becoming a craftsman. I felt very good when I put on the quality leather shoes (and probably looked better, too), and I decided I wanted to make shoes that made people feel like I did in this moment. I make each shoe completely by myself with my hands. It took about 6 years with a lot of struggle and challenges to learn what it takes to make the kind of shoes I dreamed of originally making.

IO) How did you start to form your own identity? What motivated you?

Seiji-san) My identity as an individual has been formed by where I grew up (USA), being half-Japanese and coming to Tokyo when I was a child and adult, and also from studying, working, and living in different places — Philadelphia area, San Francisco area, Tokyo, London, New York, Singapore, Beijing, Berlin, and now Tokyo again.

My brand identity (i.e. the logo) was formed through combining Eastern and Western design motifs. My shoes are a traditionally Western product made with a Japanese-like attention to detail and focus on innovation. My brand identity maybe reflects this.

IO) Who/What inspires you?

Seiji-san) Many things inspire me, from people to places to objects. And of course art and music and everything that one experiences in life. Anything that comes from the heart inspires me. Simplicity and purity above all.

From a design and style standpoint, I particularly like early 1960s style, design, automobiles, architecture, music, film, etc. which maybe came from the desire to create something pure and forward-looking, but still rooted in traditions and used in daily life as real objects.

IO) Your wish for those who appreciate your art/creation/product/ doing, Followers.

Seiji-san) I like style and quality, so I hope people who like and/or buy my shoes feel that they are made with great care to help them feel stylish and confident. When you have on nice shoes, you feel much better than when you don’t. And I hope the quality I put in them somehow is felt by the wearer. This product is made just for them with great care.

IO) What are your thoughts about trends, your entities current situation, and your product? The future?

Seiji-san) Trends are good for inspiring changes in design and keeping your perspective fresh and updated, but ultimately things that are beautiful have a quality that is beautiful regardless of trends. So I would like to be inspired by trends to rediscover things that are beautiful, but not to follow trends too much so that the original sense of beauty is lost.
